Effect of multi-sensory stimulation treatment on comatose patients after traumatic brain injury |
|
|
Abstract Objective To investigate the effect of multi-sensory stimulation on comatose patients after traumatic brain injury. Methods Thirty-six comatose patients with coma over 8 hours and Glasgow Coma Scales 3-8 were divided into two groups at random. The control group (n=18) received routine nursing while the study group (n=18) received routine nursing plus multi-sensory stimulation. GCS scores, the rate of awakening and time of awakening after treatment in the two groups were compared. Results Thirty days after treatment, the GCS scores in the study group(10.22±3.59)were higher than those in the control group(7.94±2.98), with significant difference (P<0.05) . Six months later, the GCS scores and the rate of awakening in the study group were higher than those in the control group while the time of awakening in the study group (17.23±8.78) was shorter than that in the control group (27.20±10.02) (P<0.05). Conclusions Multi-sensory stimulation treatment contributes to awakening patients with severe TBI,promote functional recovery of patients’ brain and increase the rate of awakening.
