Abstract Objective To study the relationship between Zuckerkandl’s tubercle (ZT)and the recurrent laryngeal nerve(RLN). Methods We examined 51 specimens(102 sides) from cadavers , observed the shape, size and association with RLN.ZT was graded as Grade 0(unrecognizable), Grade 1(thickening of the lateral lobe only,≤6 mm), Grade 2(6~10 mm) and Grade 3(larger than 10 mm).ZT was classified into three groups according to its location in the thyroid. Results 88.2%(45/51)of the cadavers were found in the right side, 74.5%(38/51 in the left side and 72.5%(37/51)bilateral. 12.7%(13/102) were found to be of Grade 0, 3.9%(4/102) Grade 1, 54.9%(56/102)Grade 2 and 28.4%(29/102) of Grade 3. ZT was mainly located in the middle third of the thyroid gland. Some of the tubercles passed over the RLN or branches; some pointed to the RLN or branches. Conclusion As a new anatomical landmark ,ZT remains in a constant position and is easy to observe and touch. There is close relationship between ZT and RLN.
