Abstract Objective To investigate the expression of the aldehyde oxidase (human aldehyde oxidase, hAOX) in renal cell carcinoma and its correlations with clinical biological behavior. Methods Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of hAOX in 86 cases of renal carcinoma and normal renal histopathological specimens, including 64 cases of clear cell carcinoma, 18 cases of papillary renal cell carcinoma and 4 cases of granulosa cell carcinoma. TNM staging criteria defined 26 cases in stage Ⅰ, 31 cases in stage Ⅱ, and 29 cases in stage Ⅲ+Ⅳ. There were 31 cases with lymph node metastasis and 55 cases without lymph node metastasis. Prism 6.0 statistical software was used to analyze the relationships between hAOX and clinicopathological factors and 5-year survival rate. Results The positive expression rate of immunohistochemical hAox was 22.09% in 86 cases of renal carcinoma, compared to 85.0% in normal tissues, which was significantly higher than that in renal carcinoma tissues. The expression of hAox was independent of the age, gender, tissue type and tumor diameter of patients with renal cancer. However, it was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis, TNM stage and ki-67 expression. The 5-year survival rate of patients with hAox (+) expression was significantly higher than that of patients with hAox (-) expression. Moreover, the prognosis of patients with hAox (+) expression was significantly better than that of patients with hAox (-) expression. Conclusion The expression of hAOX is correlated with the occurrence, development and prognosis of renal cancer, plays an important role in maintaining the normal growth of cells, and facilitates clinical diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.
