Abstract Objective To explore the influence of sleep status on the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Methods A total of 408 elderly patients who visited our hospital between May 2020 and February 2021 were selected as subjects. The demographic characteristics, physical health indicators, depression status, and biochemical indicators were collected using a questionnaire. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess the sleep status of the patients. A logistic multi-factor regression model was used to analyze the influence of sleep status on the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases in the elderly. Results A total of 401 valid questionnaires were collected from 408 elderly patients, so the recovery rate was 98.28%. Eighty-eight of these patients suffered from cardiovascular diseases, and the incidence was 21.95%. One hundred and forty-five of these patients (36.16%) experienced sleep deficiency, 118 (29.43%) experienced moderate sleep, and 138 (34.41%) experienced excessive sleep. Thirty-nine cases (44.32%) with cardiovascular diseases experienced sleep deficiency, and 37 cases (42.05%) experienced excessive sleep, compared with 106 cases (33.87%) and 101 cases (33.26%) respectively among elderly patients without cardiovascular diseases. Sleep quality of elders with cardiovascular diseases was significantly lower than that of elderly patients without cardiovascular diseases. The logistic regression analysis model showed that insufficient sleep (OR=2.575, 95% CI: 1.709-3.866), excessive sleep (OR=1.377, 95% CI: 1.009-2.014) and poor sleep quality (OR=4.371, 95% CI: 2.044-9.336) were independent risk factors for cardiovascular diseases in the elderly (P<0.05).Conclusions The sleep status of the elderly makes a difference to the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. Monitoring the sleep status of the elderly is of great significance for prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
