Abstract Objective To clarify the mechanism of childhood traumatic experience on depression, this study constructed a moderated mediation model, focusing on the mediating role of anger expression and the moderating role of stress. Methods A total of 418 male recruits were enrolled to investigate childhood traumatic experiences, stress, anger expression, and depression by questionnaire. Results After controlling for age, educational background, family location, only child status and parental relationship, childhood trauma had a significant positive predictive effect on depression. Internal expression of anger, external expression of anger and control of external expression of anger could mediate the relationship between childhood traumatic experience and depression. The direct predictive effect of childhood traumatic experience on depression was moderated by stress. Conclusions To guide the recruits to express their anger reasonably is of great significance to their depression and their psycho-social adaptation service.
