Abstract:Objective To compare the clinical effects following non- surgical periodontal treatment with magnetostrictive dental unit PR-ZH1 or with combination of piezoelectric ultrasonic subgingival scaling and root planing with hand instrument ( SRP) for patients with chronic periodontitis. Methods 16 patients with chronic periodontitis were randomly treated in a split- mouth design with magnetostrictive dental unit PR-ZH1 and root planning with hand instrument (test group) or a combination of piezoelectric ultrasonic subgingival scaling and root planing with hand instrument ( control group). The degree of discomfort experienced during the treatment was graded by the patient using visual analogue scale ( VAS) immediately after the completion of test and control treatment procedures. The following clinical parameters were recorded by a calibrated and blinded examiner in baseline,3 months,6 months respectively: plaque index (PLI),bleeding index (BI),probing depth (PD) and attachment loss (AL) .Results Probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level and bleeding index improved in 2 groups from baseline to the end of 3 months and 6 months; however, there was no difference between the 2 instrumentation modalities. The patients perceived less pain with magnetostrictive dental unit PR-ZH1 during therapy. Conclusion Both of magnetostrictive dental unit PR-ZH1 ultrasonic subgingival scaling with manual instrument and piezoelectric ultrasonic subgingival scaling and root planing with hand instrument can effectively improve the clinical periodontal index. The treatment is effective, but magnetostrictive dental unit PR-ZH1 increases patients comfort and relieves the pain.
