Abstract:Objective To evaluate the utility of MRI in demonstrating the glossopharyngeal nerves and neurovascular relationships with 3D FIASTA and 3D T1 SPGR sequence. Methods A total of 17 volunteers, 5 patients with glossopharyngeal neuralgia underwent three-dimensional fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition (3D FIESTA) and three-dimensional time of flight spoiled gradient recalled acquisition (3D T1 SPGR) MR imaging. Image quality, anatomical features, neurovascular relationships of the glossopharyngeal caused by neurovascular compression were analyzed from multi-planar reconstruction (MPR) images. Results The image quality of 3D FIESTA sequence is superior to that of 3D T1 SPGR sequence. The number of superior quality is 43/44(98%) with 3D FIESTA and 19/44(43%) with 3D T1 SPGR. The number of poor quality is 25(57%) with 3D T1 SPGR and 1(2%) with 3D FIESTA. The glossopharyngeal nverves and the relationship between cranial nerves and vessels could be demonstrated clearly by 3D FIESTA images combined with 3D T1 SPGR MPR images. Among the 5 cases of glossopharyngeal neuralgia, blood vessels were found to be in contact with the glossopharyngeal nerve in 6/10(60%), however, in 8/34(23%) in the 17 volunteers. Conclusions Use of 3D-FIESTA sequence enables accurate identification of glossopharyngeal nerves. The neurovascular relationships and abnormal changes caused by neurovascular compression can be demonstrated by 3D-FIESTA sequence combined with 3D T1 SPGR sequence.
