A study on mental health status and coping styles in nurses of an Armed Police hospital

Abstract:Objective To investigate the mental health status in nurses of an Armed Police hospital, thereby providing theoretical basis for maintaining nurses’ mental health and improving the quality of nursing. Methods Totally 94 nurses were investigated by using symptom checklist-90(SCL-90) and simplified coping style questionnaire(SCSQ). Results (1)Scores of interpersonal sensitivity and depression in nurses were lower than those in the national norm significantly(P<0.01). Scores of hostility, phobia anxiety and paranoid ideation were lower than those in the national norm significantly(P<0.05).Score of somatization in army nurses was higher than that in nurses with employment contract significantly(P<0.05) and the other factors were not significant(P>0.05). (2)The positive coping style in the nurses was higher than that in the national norm significantly(P<0.01) and the negative coping style was lower than that in the national norm significantly(P<0.01). The positive coping style of the contract nurses in this hospital was higher than that in nurses of a local hospital significantly(P<0.05).The negative coping style of the contract nurses in this hospital was lower than that in nurses of the other local hospital significantly(P<0.01). Conclusions The mental health situation of nurses in this hospital is good, but physical discomfort of army nurses is obvious.
