Abstract:Objective To study MRI manifestations of long bone growth plate in recruits. Methods Imaging characteristics were studied through 230 male soldiers before the military exercise. Using X-ray imaging of growth plate of the proximal tibia of recruits before training and Tanner’s staging criteria of the growth plate cartilage of the secondary ossification center, the closure degree of growth plate of the proximal tibia was observed and analyzed. Imaging of X-rays and MRI on the closure degree of the epiphyseal line was concluded and compared. Results According to Tanner’s staging criteria of the closure degree displayed on X-ray picture in 230 recruits of growth plate of the proximal tibia, incomplete closed in 129 cases(56.09%), complete closed in 101 cases(43.91%). MRI images showed that incomplete closed in 163 cases(70.87%), complete closed in 67 cases(29.13%); the difference between the two were significant by comparing with the closure degree of growth plate of the proximal tibia(χ2=37.24, P=0.046). The morphologic appearances of long bone growth plate were also different. MRI signal intensity of the growth plate can be divided into four categories:(A)signal similar to the cortical bone; (B) signal similar to cancellous bone; (C) signal similar to the gastrocnemius muscle; (D) signal similar to articular cartilage. Containing A and(or) B signal was defined as complete closed growth plate, the others were incomplete closed ones. Referring to Tanner’s staging criteria, cartilage of growth plate overlies over or less than one half on the metaphyseal region. The number of the second degree and third degree in X-ray manifestations added to 120 cases, which far surpass that in MRI(χ2=17.21, P=0.0018). Conclusions The proximal tibial stem epiphyseal growth plate closure degrees in recruits are different. MRI has high spatial resolution and high SNR so that it can clearly reveal the growth plate, can display closing degree of normal growth plate of the proximal tibia , morphologic and signal characteristics.
