Quantitative analysis of p63 expression in lung cancers and its relationship with cancer cellular apoptosis

Abstract:Objective To analyze the expression of protein p63 in normal lung and lung cancers quantitatively and judge its relationship with cellular apoptosis. Methods Lung cancer and normal lung tissues were collected and tissue arrays were prepared. The p63 expression was determined by immunohistochemistry and analyzed quantitatively. The cellular apoptosis was analyzed quantitatively by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL). The final qualified results (positive unit, PU) were analyzed statistically. Results The PU values of the intensity of p63 protein expression in normal lung tissue, adenocarcinoma, large cell carcinoma and small cell carcinoma were all lower than that in squamous carcinoma (P<0.01); The PU value of normal lung tissue was higher than those in adenocarcinoma, large cell carcinoma and small cell carcinoma (P<0.01); while there was a positive correlation between P63 protein expression and apoptosis in all kinds of lung cancer (P<0.01). Conclusions The extents of protein p63 expression are distinct on the normal lung and lung carcinoma tissues. The p63 expression and cellular apoptosis on the normal lung tissues are separated. However, p63 expression and cellular apoptosis on the lung malignant tissues are positively correlated.
