Objective To investigate the effect of a self-made fume-extracting device in reducing the concentration of organic components of surgical smoke, and to provide evidence for purifying the air in the operating room. Methods The self-made fume-extracting device was applied to the patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Fifty eligible patients were randomly divided into the experimental and control groups. In the experimental group, one end of the pneumoperitoneum tube was connected to the trocar valve switch and the other end was connected to the self-made fume-extracting device. The detector probe was attached to the end of the device. In the control group, one end of the pneumoperitoneum tube was connected to the trocar switch, while the other end was connected to the probe of the detector. The concentrations of organic components of surgical smoke were detected and analyzed between the two groups. Results The concentrations of seven halothane, cyclopentane and ethylbenzene in the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group. The highest clearance rate of the self-made fume-extracting device reached 94.03% with acetophenone, and the lowest clearance rate was 33.57% with n-decane. The average clearance rate of this self-made fume-extracting device in the process of adsorbing organic components was 73.22%.Conclusions The self-made fume-extracting device can safely and effectively filter the surgical smoke and provide high-quality air for the medical staff in the operating room.
