Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on T lymphocyte homeostasis (Th1/Th2 and Th17/Treg) in PAP soldiers. Methods Twenty-three PAP male soldiers were subjected to acute (a bout) and short-term (4 weeks, 3 times/week) HIIT respectively. Venous blood was taken and relative expressions (expressed by positive cell rate) of cytokines of IFN-γ (Th1 subset), IL-4 (Th2 subset), IL-17A (Th17 subset), TGF-β (Treg subset) and Treg activation markers of CD39, LAP and GARP were determined with flow cytometry before, immediately after, 60 min after acute HIIT and before and after chronic HIIT.Results Expression levels of IFN-γ in Th1 were upregulated (P<0.05) immediately after acute HIIT, while GARP, LAP and CD39 were elevated (P<0.05) and IFN-γ recovered (P<0.05) after 60 min of acute HIIT. IL-4 did not change at any time-point (P>0.05). After 4 weeks of HIIT, LAP in Treg decreased (P<0.05). Expressions of IL-17A and TGF-β could not be detected. Conclusions Acute HIIT can transiently perturb Th1/Th2 homeostasis and shift Th1/Th2 balance to Th1, while during recovery, immunosuppressive Treg cells are mobilized to possibly regulate and reconstruct T lymphocyte homeostasis. Short-term (4 weeks) HIIT can reduce immunosuppressive ability of Treg cells without altering T lymphocyte homeostasis.
