Abstract:Objective To investigate the efficacy of mindfulness-based stress reduction against generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Methods Seventy-six patients with GAD were randomly divided into the treatment group and control group with 38 patients in each. All the patients were given routine psychological treatment and systematic drug therapy, but mindfulness-based stress reduction was offered in the treatment group. The scores of Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), hamilton anxiety rating scale (HAMA), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) before and after treatment were compared between the two groups. Results After treatment, the mean scores of SAS, SDS, HAMA and PSQI in the treatment group were significantly lower than those in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (t=3.14,P<0.05). Conclusions The combination of medication and mindfulness-based stress reduction is more effective than medication alone in improving GAD, sleep quality and quality of life.
