Status quo and Demand of Health Service Support to the Coast Guard

Abstract：Objective To find out about the status quo and demand of medical support to the Coast Guard, and to provide data for health care for the Coast Guard. Methods Between October 2018 and April 2019, a convenience sampling method was used to select the administrators of three grassroots units of the Coast Guard in Qingdao and Weihai of Shandong Province as the subjects. A survey using a self-made questionnaire was conducted to collect information on the current levels of health support and needs of grassroots units of the Coast Guard. The constituent ratio and selection rate were used for related statistical analysis. Results In this survey, there were 270 individuals from three units involved, 250 of whom were males and 20 females. Their age ranged from 23 to 49, and their length of military service ranged from 1 to 32 years. 25.6% of them had associate degrees, 72.6% had bachelor's degrees, and 1.9% had master's degrees, with a wide range of positions. 95.2% of them believed that the military had health emergency plans and facilities for health informatization, although currently imperfect. 19.0% of them held that the army had a three-level treatment platform. 78.7% of them were of the opinion that health care systems should be strengthened, and more than 95% reported that the ship needed to be equipped with health rescue personnel when on a mission. Almost all the subjects believed in an urgent need for medical informatization, remote medical consultation and first aid guidance. Conclusions The current level of health support to the Coast Guard leaves much to be desired. Making emergency plans according to missions, upgrading medical informatization, and constructing better health care platforms will be the priorities.
