Abstract Objective To investigate the mental health status and personality characteristics of patients with pectus excavatum so as to provide important data for comprehensive biopsychosocial treatment schemes. Methods Data were collected from 146 volunteer patients by Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI) in the Department of Thoracic Surgery of our hospital between 2009 and 2011 and were compared with Chinese norms for adults. Results Compared with the norms, scores of two validity scales of MMPI were significantly low, including Lie(L) and Frequency(F) (P<0.01), scores of four clinical scales were significantly high, including Hypochondriasis(Hs)、Hysteria(Hy)、Mania(Ma)and Social introversion(Si)in male patients, and those of four clinical scales were significantly high, including Hs, Hy, Masculinity-femininity(Mf)and Si in female patients. Conclusions Patients with pectus excavatum are in poorer psychosomatic health than healthy people, with obvious personality characteristics. So it is important for the patients to undergo psychological tests before and after operation to institute a reasonable treatment.
