Abstract Objective To demonstrate the construction of a simple PACS system using DICOM photo browsing software in order to have medical images shared by the whole hospital and achieve tele-consultation. Methods The local networks available in the hospital and PCs in each office were used to connect the open imaging equipment (CR,DR,CT,MRI,DSA,digital gastrointestinal machines and laser film cameras with Internet interface)with DICOM interface through the free DICOM photo browsing software in the Internet. Results PCc with browsing software for DICOM images were capable of real-time transmission and image-reading as PACS does. Conclusions Using DICOM photo browsing software to construct a simple PACS system is easy, economical and practical in most small and medium-sized hospitals to realize remote consultation with imaging equipment under field conditions.
