Formulation of the competency trait scale for noncommissioned officers in Chinese People’s Armed Police Forces |

Abstract Objective To formulate a competency trait scale (CTS) for noncommissioned officers in Chinese People’s Armed Police Forces and to confirm its reliability and validity. Methods 572 noncommissioned officers were measured using the competency trait scale (CTS). Results Based on item analysis and exploring factor analysis, the scale involved five dimensions: self-control, organization commitment, achievement motivation, communication ability and responsibility. The alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.888, while that of other dimensions was 0.806, 0.750, 0.718, 0.682, and 0.682, respectively. The retest coefficient was 0.825. There was significant difference between ordinary noncommissioned officers and excellent noncommissioned officers in each dimension of CTS. The job performance of noncommissioned officers was positively correlated with self-control, organization commitment, achievement motivation, responsibility and the total score of competency trait. Conclusions CTS is highly reliable and valid as a psychological tool for noncommissioned officers in Armed Police Forces.
