Abstract Objective To investigate the expression and role of interleukin-23(IL-23) in nasal polyp patients. Methods NP tissues of 15 nasal polyp(NP) patients and 15 simple deviations of normal inferior turbinate tissues of nasal septum patients were collected. mRNA and protein expression of IL-23 were detected by means of immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. Results Immunohistochemistry staining demonstrated that there were far more IL-23 positive cells in NP patients than in normal controls. The average expression level of IL-23 protein in NP tissues (0.321±0.023) was significantly different (P<0.01) from that of normal inferior turbinate tissues (0.199±0.011). RT-PCR demonstrated that the average expression level of IL-23p19mRNA in NP tissues (0.676±0.077) was significantly different (P<0.01) from that in normal inferior turbinate tissues(0.212±0.015). Conclusions IL-23 may be involved in the chronic inflammation of NP.
