Abstract Objective To observe the effect of arterial embolization on patients with intractable postpartum hemorrhage. Methods Twenty-four patients who underwent emergency arterial embolization for intractable postpartum hemorrhage between January 2008 and November 2012 were included in the study. Patients were contacted to obtain information about menstruation, fertility and other complications after arterial embolization. Results Among the 24 women, 22(91.7%)had successful control of PPH, failed to control PPH in 2 patients(8.3%)and had a hysterectomy, 1 patient underwent hysterscopy uterus cavity hematocele, there was no uterus cavity adhesion, 2 women were lost to follow up, 19 women(96.4%)reported regular menses. Only one woman informed pregnancy again two years later. No complications have taken place in all subjects. Conclusions Arterial embolization is effective, safe and not traumatic for patients, and the study suggests that menses are not adversely affected by arterial embolization, but it remains to study its effect on fertility. No side effects are found.
