Abstract Objective To investigate the effect of Compound Danshen Dripping Pills on type 2 diabetic patients with urinary ablumin excretion rate. Methods 68 patients were recruited between May and December 2005 from courtyard outpatients and hospitalized patients, who did not take hypoglycemic drugs. Followed up for 7 years, these patients were randomly divided into two groups: saline group blood glucose, blood pressure, blood lipid control group (35 cases), Danshen group in the saline group on the basis of Compound Danshen Dripping Pills (33 cases). During treatment urinary albumin excretion rate, and the relationships between glycosylated hemoglobin, blood lipids, blood pressure were investigated. Results (1) After five years, and 7 years of treatment, total cholesterol was significantly lowered compared with before(P<0.05), low density lipoprotein saline group after 5 years of treatment compared with before treatment was significantly reduced(P<0.05). In the Danshen group after 7 years of treatment, high density lipoprotein, triglyceride and before treatment were significantly different(P<0.05), But in the two groups of patients before and after 7 years, the average blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, blood pressure and blood lipid levels were not statistically different compared with the same period. (2) In the two groups, urinary albumin excretion rates were increased, 5 years, 7 years after, in the two groups as compared with that before treatment, differences were significant (P<0.001). (3) In the two groups, diabetic nephropathy patients all increased, but the incidence rate in Danshen group was lower than that in control group(10.0% vs 33.3%, P<0.05). Conclusions Compound Danshen dripping pills therapy can retard the occurrence and development of diabetic nephropathy.
