Relationship between percentage body fat and lung ventilation function and metabolic index in adult males |

Abstract Objective To investigate the effect of the body fat content and distribution on pulmonary ventilatory function and related metabolic index in the adult males. Methods Based on cluster sampling, we enrolled 600 healthy adult males aged 22-77 years in this hospital from November 2012 to April 2014. The basic data were obtained through the questionnaire survey. Finally we examined the relationship between the percentage body fat (PBF), waist-hip ratio(WHR) and VC,FVC,FEVl,FEV1/VC,FEV1/FVC,PEF,FPG,UA,TG,TC,HDL-C, LDL-C. Results WHR tended to increase along with age. PBF obesity rate and WHR obesity rate tended to increase with age. Compared with the normal group, the pulmonary ventilation function reduced significantly in PBF and WHR obesity group. There was a negative correlation between PBF and VC, FVC, FEV, PEF. But PBF showed an obvious positive correlation with FEV1 / FVC. PBF was positively associated with FPG, UA, TG, TC, HDL-C and LDL-C. WHR was positively correlated with FPG、UA、TG and LDL-C. Conclusions Increase in PBF and central obesity in adult males are the risk factors of pulmonary ventilation function impairment and metabolic disorders.
