Abstract Objective To analyze the different surgical results of removing central neurocytomas by different operation methods, and discuss the postoperative complications. Methods 87 patients with central neurocytoma admitted to this hospital between September 2012 and August 2014 were enrolled and divided into two groups according to different surgical approaches. Group 1 (27 cases) underwent operation by interhemispheric transcallosal approach, while group 2 (60 cases) had their tumors removed through cortex colostomy. Preoperative symptoms, removal rate and postoperative complications in the two groups were retrospectively analyzed. Results The total removal rates were 26% (7 cases) and 30% (18 cases) in group 1 and group 2, respectively. In group 1, decline of muscle strength occurred in 3 cases (11.1%), and epilepsy in 1 case (3.7%); in group 2, decline of muscle strength and epilepsy both occurred in 9 cases (15.0%). Conclusions Both methods are primary treatment choice for central neurocytoma with good prognosis. But decline in muscle strength and epilepsy are more likely to occur when the tumors are removed through cortex colostomy than by interhemispheric transcrallosal approach.
