Survey on visual display terminal syndrome in staffs of a network company in Beijing |

Abstract Objective To investigate the incidence rate and related factors of visual display terminal syndrome (VDT) in video users. Methods Questionnaire survey and ophthalmological examination on 141 employees of a network company in Beijing were conducted. Survey included general information, refractive status, working conditions and time, and video use time in the last three months, the symptoms of fatigue, other systemic symptoms, average fatigue time after long watching, the number of daily fatigue. Ophthalmologic examinations included visual acuity, intraocular pressure, xerophthalmia and fundus examination. Results Subjects were 116 network technicians (front-line employees), and other 25 employees engaged in human resources, public relations, planning, translation etc (non-front line). 87.2% of respondents had myopia, (13.9±2.0) h/d due to video usage. 97.9% of respondents were diagnosed as having VDT, in whom frontline staff group consisting of 100%, were higher than in the non-front-line employee groups (88.0%), the difference was statistically significant (χ2=9.04, P=0.0026). Moreover, average fatigue time after long watching was(4.60±2.3)h, and the number of daily fatigue was 2.35±1.46. The top four frequent symptoms of fatigue were xerophthalmia, lassitude, eye swelling, and blurred vision. Conclusions VDT occurs with high incidence in the network company, with difference between front line and non-front line employees. They have obvious eye fatigue and external symptoms. Therefore there is urgent need for health education and prevention of VDT.
