Correlations between serum pro-BNP and hs-CRP levels and cognition in elderly patients with hypertension |

Abstract Objective To investigate the correlations between levels of pro-natriuretic peptide precursor, hypersensitive C-reactive protein and cognition in elderly patients with hypertension. Methods A total of 178 patients with hypertension who were admitted to our hospital between January 2019 and October 2020 were included in this study. Serum levels of pro-BNP and hs-CRP were detected. The patients were divided into two groups: the cognitive impairment group (n=61) and non-cognitive impairment group (n=117) according to the MMSE score and Montreal Cognitive Assessment score. Results Serum levels of pro-BNP in the cognitive impairment group were significantly higher than those of the non-cognitive impairment group(426.52±18.72 pg/ml vs 120.36±15.61 pg/ml, P=0.000), so were the levels of hs-CRP in the cognitive impairment group(5.91±0.46 ng/L vs 3.27±0.52 ng/L,P=0.000). Conclusions Serum levels of pro-BNP and hs-CRP are closely related to the occurrence of cognitive dysfunction. It is suggested that these levels be monitored in the elderly patients with hypertension so as to prevent cognitive dysfunction.
