Effect of vision-display-terminal size on visual fatigue of school-age children |

Abstract Objective To investigate the differences of visual fatigue caused by different visual-display-terminal size on school-age children.Methods Thirty school-age children were selected as the study subjects. Each one watched 2 sessions of 20 minutes course videos with mobile phone, tablet and television under the same condition. The visual acuity, the count of scardamyxis and the Schirmer test data after watching were recorded.Results After the courses, the vision acuity decreased compared with the pre-test data(OD 5.00±0.00,OS 5.00±0.00), and the mobile phone group data(OD 4.90±0.05,OS 4.86±0.07) were lower than the TV group(OD 4.98±0.02,OS 4.94±0.05), and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). In the later stage of the test, the count of scardamysis in each group increased significantly compared with the basic level(12.10±0.88). The number of mobile phone group(22.80±1.48) was higher than the tablet(19.70±2.06) and TV groups(17.10±1.52). The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). In the Schirmer test after the course, the secretion of tear compared with the basics [OD(12.30±1.06)mm,OS(12.30±1.49)mm] in each group increased significantly. The data of mobile phone group [OD(20.40±1.84)mm,OS(20.70±2.45)mm] was higher than the tablet [OD(17.40±1.17)mm,OS(17.70±2.00)mm] and TV group [OD(15.30±0.82)mm,OS(15.60±1.58)mm]. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusions School-age children will be faced with more visual fatigue from smaller visual terminal screens than large ones.
