Abstract Objective To find the longitudinal genetic effects on cranial base in mixed dentition. Methods Lateral cranial radiographs of 89 pairs of twins were measured. Mixed longitudinal observation method was used to obtain 183 pairs of effective twins, including 110 identical pairs and 73 fraternal pairs. Twin study method was used to conduct the longitudinal statistical analysis of genetic and environmental effects of skull base morphology. Results Statistical comparisons revealed significant (P<0.05) environmental effects on the angle (NSBa), the depths (SN, L1-2, L2+3, L2) ; whilst genetic effects on the depth (SBa) and the height (H2) (P<0.05). Conclusions The variation of skull base structure length is strongly controlled by heredity and weakly influenced by environment. The sphenoccipital complex is the most affected by environment among all the parts of skull base, which has certain clinical significance. NSBa Angle is relatively stable and established earlier.
