Abstract Objective To understand the oral health care concepts and behaviors of recruits of a certain unit of Chinese People's Armed Police Force and to provide reference for implementing oral health care services effectively. Methods The questionnaire was designed according to " The Fourth Oral Questionnaire of the Army" published in 2013. Using cluster random sampling, a questionnaire survey was conducted, which investigated oral hygiene habits and self-assessments of oral medical needs on 1140 recruits (1086 valid questionnaires, recruit group) of a certain unit. The result was also compared with veterans of the unit (1096 valid questionnaires, veteran group)who had been in the military for more than one year. Results Among the recruit group, 15.84% used dental floss, 88.58% insisted on gargling after meals, 83.98% brushed their teeth more than twice a day, and 21.55% brushed their teeth for more than 2 minutes each time. Among the self-assessment of recruits, no bleeding gums accounted for 35.08%. and he percentages for no oral diseases, regular oral examinations and the need for oral medical treatment were 72.93%, 1.66% and 47.42% respectively. In the past year, 28.54% visited the department of stomatology more than once. The proportion of the recruit group who used toothpicks, rinsed their mouths after meals, brushed their teeth more than twice a day and who self-judged that they had no oral diseases was higher than that of the veteran group. The difference between the two groups was significant (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between the recruit group and the veteran group in the proportion of brushing time, flossing or no bleeding gums. The proportion of the veteran group with regular check-ups, the need for dental medical treatment, and more than one dental visit in the past year was higher than that in the recruit group. The difference between the two groups was significant (P<0.05).Conclusions The recruit group had better oral hygiene habits and oral health than the veteran group, suggesting that it is necessary to strengthen oral health education and oral medical services for the officers and soldiers of the unit so as to improve their oral health conditon.
