Abstract: Objective To study the status of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy in improving the scores of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire in patients with mild and moderate traumatic brain injury. Methods Sixty-seven patients with mild and moderate traumatic brain injury, who were treated in this hospital recently, were successively recruited, and the subjects were randomly divided into HBO group (n=34) and control group (n=33). All the patients in both groups were given the basic therapy for closed brain injury. Besides, those in the HBO group were treated with HBO, the pressure was 0.22MPa, the oxygen concentration in the cabin was controlled below 23%, oxygen uptake was 85min/time and lasted for100 minutes, once a day, and 10 times as a course for a total of 3 courses. All the patients were evaluated using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire before and after therapy. Results Before therapy, the distributions of item scores of PSQI and the total score of PSQI were close between the two groups (P> 0.05). Most item scores of PSQI and the total score of PSQI after therapy were all significantly better than those before therapy in both groups, and most item scores of PSQI and the total score of PSQI after therapy in the HBO group were also better than those in the control group ( P< 0.01-0.05). Conclusions HBO therapy obviously improves the sleep quality in patients with mild and moderate traumatic brain injury.
