Abstract:Objective
To collect data on the status of schistosomiasis epidemic in Armed Police Forces in Dongting Lake Basin, Hunan Province, in order to establish the scientific basis for developing targeted prevention measures. Methods Epidemiological investigation was conducted of schistosomiasis from the Armed Police database and the database of schistosomiasis in Hunan Province. Stratified groups in the Dongting Lake Basin, including Changde, Yiyang, Yueyang and 26 garrison points and related villages, were randomly chosen to gather information about specific serological schistosomiasis antibody levels (IgG), age,
occupations and education levels. The data were analyzed and compared. Results The region-specific schistosmiasis antibody level in Armed Police Forces was significantly lower than that in the local population (P<005). Length of inhabitation in epidemic areas, occupations and the education level were related to the extent of schistosomiasis infection. Conclusions Schistosomiasis in the Armed Police Forces in the Dongting Lake is a risk factor of schistosome infection. Enhancing comprehensive management, strengthening health education, and encouraging troops’compliance and initiative are effective measures for control of epidemic.
