Effect of metoprolol combined with valsartan on hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy and left ventricular diastolic function

Abstract:Objective Effect of metoprolol combined with valsartan for treatment of hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy and left ventricular diastolic function was observed. Methods In this study, we recruited 180 patients diagnosed as having hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) by echocardiographic examination and randomly divided them into three groups, A, B and C. The treatment of the patients in group A was given metoprolol and valsartan; the group B was given valsartan; the group C was given metoprolol; all treatment courses were one year. Echocardiography, 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure, and electrocardiogram were checked, and left ventricular muscle weight and left ventricular mass index were measured. The effects and group differences after and before treatment were compared. Results After treatment, in all patients, blood pressure was well-controlled, left ventricular hypertrophy, left ventricular diastolic function were improved (P<0.01). But group A obtained better efficacy than group B and group C (P<0.01), especially the left ventricular mass index in group A dropped clearly from (136.8±7.3)g/m2 down to (127.7±4.6)g/m2 (P<0.01), the left ventricular diastolic function improved. Conclusions Metoprolol in combination with valsartan to treat hypertension can reduce blood pressure, and left ventricular hypertrophy, and improve left ventricular diastolic function.
