Abstract:Objective To test if the thickness of normal anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) can be measured by high frequency ultrasound(US). Methods The thickness of ACL near tibial insertion site was measured by US and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) in 30 normal right knees of young male soldiers. The thickness of ACL near tibial insertion site which was measured by two different radiologists by US were compared and analysed. The thickness of ACL near tibial insertion site which was measured by US and MRI were compared and analysed. Results The intraclass correlation coefficient for these 2 radiologists was 0.934(95% CI:0.867 to 0.968) and Bland Altman plot showed that the mean difference was -0.04 ( 95% CI:-0.55 to 0.47 ), indicating a very strong agreement between these 2 radiologists in measuring the thickness of ACL by US. The intraclass correlation coefficient for US and MRI was 0.914 (95% CI:0.822 to 0.959) and Bland Altman plot showed the mean difference was 0.04 (95% CI:-0.62 to 0.70), indicating a very strong agreement between these 2 methods in measuring the thickness of ACL. Conclusions High frequency ultrasound can be used as a conventional method for measuring the thickness of ACL.
