Abstract:Objective To analyze the amount of residuals of simethicone in the endoscope clamp tract after high level disinfection and its effect on endoscopy. Methods Aseptic water and simethicone at low, middle and high concentrations (0.5%, 1% and 3%) were used to rinse the endoscope clamp tract respectively. After strict cleaning and high-level disinfection, the SteriCam borescope was used to examine the residual fluid in the endoscope. The bioluminescent value of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) was measured as well. Results The amount of droplets and values of ATP bioluminescence in the endoscope clamp were significantly larger or higher when simethicone at a medium concentration (number of droplets:13.47±5.64, ATP value: 22.58±8.12) and a high concentration (number of droplets: 17.30±6.61, ATP value: 24.00±10.60)was used than when simethicone at a low concentration (number of droplets: 5.81±2.77, ATP value: 15.56±6.37) or sterile water was used(number of droplets: 6.30±3.52, ATP value: 10.97±4.84), P<0.05. The use of low-concentration simethicone did not increase the amount of residual droplets or values of ATP bioluminescence in the endoscope clamp. Conclusions Lowconcentration simethicone liquid is preferable. When high-concentration simethicone is used, two cycles of washout should be considered or the duration of washout should be extended appropriately.
