Abstract:Objective To investigate the factors associated with peptic ulcer (PU) in servicemen. Methods Seventy- eight PU patients treated in our hospital between January 2012 and December 2015 were recruited in the study while another 125 patients diagnosed with chronic gastritis during the same period were assigned as control group. Factors associated with PU including the length of military service, rank, types of work, history of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) use, history of PU family, history of smoking, diet, working time and infection of helicobacter pylori (HP) were analyzed in the study. Results The cases of patients who had a length of military service longer than 2 years, or were on chronic guard duty, or tested HP positive, or took NSAIDs for a long,or had a family history of PU or a history of smoking, or had an irregular diet or irregular working time in PU group far outnumbered those in the control group(P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the length of military service, types of work, history of PU family, history of smoking, history of NSAIDs use, working time were closely associated with PU(P<0.05). The incidence of PU in privates, privates first class, and sergeants was 6.4%, 12.8%, and 9.0% respectively what that of corporals was as high as 71.8%. Compared with the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P=0.012).Conclusions Length of military service, typess of work, history of PU family, history of smoking, history of NSAIDs use, and working time were closely associated with PU. To lower the incidence of PU, we should focus our attention on corporals and those on guard duty, especially on their living habits.
