Abstract:Objective To investigate serum 25(OH)D3 level of adults and its correlations with the season, gender, BMI, calcium, phosphorous and PTH of physical examinees in Beijing. Methods The levels of serum 25(OH)D3 and PTH data of 825 physical examinees were acquired by Electro-Chemiluminescence Immunoassay (ECLI). The levels of 25(OH)D3 were analyzed in connection with the season, gender and BMI. Linear regressions were used to study the relationships between 25(OH)D3 and other variables. Results Serum 25(OH)D3 followed a skewed distribution with a median of 12.31(8.57,16.70)ng/ml. In our study, 397 samples (accounting for 48.1% of total samples) were diagnosed as severe deficiency of 25(OH)D3 (<12 ng/ml) while another 314 samples (38.1%) as moderate deficiency of 25(OH)D3 (12-20 ng/ml). The level of serum 25(OH)D3 was significantly higher in summer and autumn and was at the bottom in spring. There was significant difference in the level of serum 25(OH)D3 between males and females, with the level among men (aged below 60) evidently higher than among women (P<0.01). Serum 25(OH)D3 level was significantly lower among obese and overweight women than among women of normal weight (P<0.05). Female serum 25(OH)D3 level was negatively correlated with BMI (r=-0.143,P=0.015), so was sample 25(OH)D3 with PTH (r=-0.234,P<0.01).Conclusions Serum 25(OH)D deficiency is common among physical examinees in Beijing. It is recommended that specific vitamin D supplementation for different seasons, sex and BMI be initiated for primary prevention.
