Abstract Objective To study the relationship between the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) level in gingival crericalar fluid (GCF) and periodontal clinical parameters. Methods The GCF samples were collected in 12 periodontally healthy individuals,12 gingivitis and 24 chronic periodontitis patients. VEGF levels in GCF were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). The data were analyzed using SPSS13.0 software package. Results The VEGF concentrations were higher in patients with periodontal disease than in persons with healthy gingiva. There was a statistical difference between the four groups (P<0.05). The concentration of VEGF in GCF was positivly related to gingival index (GI) and attachment loss(AL) and not related to probing depth(PD) .Conclusions VEGF level in GCF is closly related progression of periodontal disease, and can be regarded as an useful index to reflect the status of periodontal disease.
