Abstract Objective To study the present situation of the chronic diseases and quality of life in the veteran retirees in Xi’an. Methods Stratified sampling method was employed and, 225 veteran retirees were enrolled and proceeded with physical examination. They were also surveyed with standard questionnaire of SF-36. Results In the study, 100% veteran retirees have chronic diseases and 94.6% of veteran retirees have more than one chronic disease. According to the estimation of life quality offered by SF-36 model, the population with good, middle and poor quality of life accounted for 33.3%, 55.5%, and 11.2%, respectively. Most chronic diseases have influence on the quality of life, and the quality of life in the elderly can affect the occurrence, development and outcome of the diseases. Conclusions Many diseases have effect on quality of life in the veteran retirees. It is necessary to take comprehensive measures for improving their overall health situation.
