Abstract Objective To study the effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy on middle-aged and old women with knee osteoarthritis. Methods We recuited patients from August 2014 to December 2014. 65 female patients with knee arthritis were randomly divided into two groups: Glucosamine ammonia sugar group was given glucosamine sulfate capsules orally, 1-2 (0.314 g-0.628 g)once, 3 times a day, for 8 weeks. Extracorporeal shock wave(ESW)group was given the impact frequency of 7 Hz, healing energy to choose 1-2 bar, every part, under the shock of 2000 per week, 8 times for one course of treatment. Before and after a course of treatment, for the two groups of patients,we evaluated the visual analog pain score (visual analog scale, VAS), knee functional score (Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index, WOMAC) and measurement of 50 meters walking time. Results The two groups of patients did not have serious adverse reactions. ESW group of patients had a different degree of pain symptoms relief, the average VAS pain score (3.2±2.4) before the treatment (6.8±2.2) decreased significantly (P<0.05). The knee joint function was improved; the WOMAC index (P<0.05). 50 meters walking time (37.0±6.3 s) before the treatment (39.9±7.7 s) have significantly reduced (P<0.05). In control group,VAS pain score, the knee joint function, 50 meters walking time had no obvious improvement. Conclusion Compared with oral glucosamine, ESWT for treatment of knee osteoarthritis in elderly women has no side effects, can relieve pain, restore joint function and can be selected as a new treatment for osteoarthritis.
