Abstract Objective To compare the calcium ion concentration in saliva between chronic periodontitis patients and periodontally healthy controls. Methods This study contained 60 subjects in all: 30 periodontally health subjects as control group and 30 patients with chronic periodontitis. The periodontally clinical parameters and salivary samples were collected. Then the concentration of calcium ion in saliva from all samples was analyzed by using ion selective ionization analyzer. Results The calcium concentrations in saliva from the subjects with chronic periodontitis and periodontally healthy group respectively were (2.24±0.02) mmol/L and (2.01±0.08) mmol/L. There was significant difference between chronic periodontitis group and control group (P<0.001).Conclusions The occurrence and development of salivary calcium ion concentration can improve the effect of plaque mineralization concentration in the chronic periodontal disease and there might be higher calcium ion concentration in saliva with chronic periodontitis compared with the periodontally health subjects.
