Abstract Objective To explore the relationships between coronary heart disease and cognitive dysfunction in the elders. Methods A total of 606 cases of elderly patients from the Department of Geriatrics, Department of Cardiology and Center for Medical Examination were chosen between January 2018 and April 2019. The mini mental state scale (MMSE), clinical dementia rating (CDR) and activity of daily living (ADL) scale were used for the survey. According to the occurrence of coronary heart disease (CHD), these cases were divided into the CHD group (n=186) and control group (n=420). The effect of (CHD) on MMSE scores and cognitive function was studied while the correlation between CHD and cognitive dysfunction was analyzed. Results In the CHD group, the MMSE score 26.18±3.21, and CDR score was 0.40±0.59, ADL score was 22.29±4.14, compared to 27.18±3.36, 0.17±0.37, and 21.31±3.92 in the control group. The difference in MMSE, CDR and ADL scores between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). The difference in cognitive function between the two groups was also statistically significant (P<0.05), suggesting that CHD was associated with cognitive dysfunction in senior citizens. Conclusions Coronary heart disease is closely related to cognitive dysfunction in the elders, so attention should be paid to the common risk factors and influencing factors in clinical practice. In elderly patients with coronary heart disease, the screening of cognitive function and intervention are necessary.
