Changes of postoperative carotid artery structure and function in patients with hypertensive disorder complicating pregnancy |

Abstract Objective To investigate the changes of postoperative carotid artery structure and function in patients with hypertensive disorder complicating pregnancy (pregnancy-induced hypertension, PIH).Methods 108 pregnant women who were admitted to our hospital between April 2014 and April 2016 were selected as subjects and divided into the study group (56 patients with PIH) and the control group (52 cases of normal pregnant women). IMT and carotid artery elasticity were measured at the end of gestation and at 3 and 6 months postpartum. The indexes included pulse wave velocity (PWVβ),stiffness (β), compliance (AC), swelling index (AI) and elasticity coefficient (EP)].Results Carotid arteries in the study group were significantly thicker than those in the control group [(617.83±187.62) μm vs (454.36±142.54) μm], and such vascular elasticity indexes as PWVβ, β, AI and Ep were higher than those in the control group (0.63±0.18, -1.67±6.92, 71.02±15.18), while AC was significantly lower than that of the control group (0.63±0.18, 13.57±4.58,134.52±19.62) vs (5.54±1.21,5.54±0.88,-1.67±6.92,71.02±15.18) vs (1.02±0.24)]. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05)., At 3 and 6 months postpartum, the difference in the carotid intima-media thickness and five indexes of carotid artery elasticity (PWVβ, Β, AI, Ep and AC) was not statistically significant (P>0.05)between the two groups.Conclusions The structure and elasticity of carotid arteries in PIH patients in late pregnancy can be changed and restored to normal at 3 months postpartum. Ultrasound RF signal angiography is of high value in assessing vascular structure and elasticity.
