Abstract:Objective To study the effects of smoking and smoking cessation on arterial hardness in healthy subjects. Methods Seventy-five chronic smoking healthy subjects were divided into maintaining smoking group (n=26) and ex-smoking group (n=21).Another 28 no-smoking healthy subjects were used as control group. The arterial hardness reflected by baPWV(brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity) was compared at baseline and after 1 month or 6 months of smoking cessation. Results The maintaining smoking group and ex-smoking group had higher values of baPWV than no-smoking group at baseline(P<0.05). After 1 month of smoking cessation, there was no difference in baPWV between maintaining smoking group and ex-smoking group(P>0.05), the same as between pre- and post-smoking cessation(P>0.05). After 6 month of smoking cessation, there was a decline in baPWV in ex-smoking group, when compared with maintaining smoking group(P<0.05). The same decrease was also observed between pre- and post-smoking cessation(P<0.05). Conclusions Smoking is associated with a decline of the arterial compliance, and 1 month of smoking cessation does not improve the arterial elasticity. But 6 months of smoking cessation improves the arterial elasticity.
