Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of Internal Brace combined with modified Brostrom procedure in the treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability. Methods A retrospective case series study was conducted on 29 male patients with chronic lateral ankle instability, using Internal-Brace combined with modified Brostrom procedure in treatment from January 2019 to December 2021. The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot scoring system, anterior drawer test and Karlsson-Peterson score were used for postoperative efficacy evaluation. Preoperative and postoperative ankle pain was assessed by Visual Analogue Score (VAS).Results All patients were followed up. During the last follow-up, 28 patients were able to complete training, such as a three-kilometer run, and regained their athletic ability. One patient suffered an incision infection after 3 days of operation, and the incision infection rate was 3.4%. The AOFAS score improved from (34.7±7.4) preoperatively to (86.6±3.3) postoperatively, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). The anterior drawer test was all negative. Karlsson-Peterson score improved from (62.4±9.5) preoperatively to (92.6±4.5) postoperatively, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). VAS score decreased from (7.1±0.7) preoperatively to (2.3±0.8) postoperatively, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.01).Conclusions Internal-Brace combined with modified Brostrom procedure can effectively treat chronic lateral ankle instability, which can significantly improve ankle function and relieve pain.
