Abstract Objective By this systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the value of elevated BNP in predicting mortality in septic patients. Methods Pubmed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and CNKI were searched(up to December, 2012).Studies on prospectively clollected data of all-cause mortality in adult septic patients with BNP measurement were included and analyzed by Revman 5.0. Results Eight studies with a total of 1464 patients were included. Elevated natriuretic peptides in sepsis patients were significantly associated with increased risk of mortality [odds ratio(OR) 10.44, 95% CI (4.99, 21.85)]. Conclusions Elevated BNP level may prove to be a powerful predictor of mortality in septic patients.Further large and more adequately powered prospective studies are warranted to clarify the assay standardization.
