Abstract Objective To explore the clinical efficacy of ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis and catheter drainage in the treatment of pericardial effusion. Methods The clinical data of 161 patients who underwent ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis and catheter drainage between January 2009 and August 2019 was retrospectively analyzed. The aetiology, clinical presentation and remission history of these patients were reviewed. Results The top three causes of pericardial effusion among these patients were neoplasm, cardiac failure and trauma (or surgery) respectively. The remission rate exceeded 70% after ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis and catheter drainage. Conclusions Ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis and catheter drainage has undeniable efficacy, which is easy to perform, less invasive, safe and suitable as a bedside therapy. It can be a preferred treatment for pericardial effusion, especially for acute cardiac tamponade.
