Abstract Objective To study the relationships between superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and diabetic retinopathy (DR).Methods After the approval by the hospital ethics committee and full notification of the patients, 32 cases of DR treated between June 2016 and February 2018 in the Department of Ophthalmology were randomly selected. The course of the diabetic disease ranged from 12 to 25 years. The activity of SOD in the serum of 32 patients with DR was detected and compared with 10 normal controls. According to the international DR grouping standard, these 32 DR patients were divided into the background DR group, mild non-proliferative DR group and severe non-proliferative DR group. The Results were compared between each two groups. Results The SOD activity in the normal control group was (177.27±29.61) U/mg, and (128.69±39.93) U/mg in DR patient group. The SOD activity in the DR group was significantly lower than that of control (P<0.01). The SOD activity in the background group was (144.68±40.05) U/mg, (128.41±28.01) U/mg in the mild non-proliferative DR group, and (94.83±26.51)U/mg in the severe non-proliferative DR group, so there was significant difference between the background group and the severe non-proliferative DR group (P<0.05).Conclusions The activity of serum SOD decreases with the development of DR, suggesting that the occurrence and development of DR are related to the decrease of SOD activity.
