Abstract:Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect of oats for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods 106 diabetic patients treated at a community clinic between August 2014 and November 2015 were selected. Using the random table method, these patients were divided into two groups: the oat group (53 people) that ate oat meals 50 ~ 100g every morning and the control group(53 people)that consumed ordinary foods. The course of treatment was 6 months. In case of high blood sugar during treatment, hypoglycemic drugs were given. BMI, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose (FBG), postprandial blood glucose 2 h (PBG), fasting insulin (F-INS), 2 h postprandial insulin (P-INS), triglyceride(TG), serum total cholesterol (TC) and other indicators of the mental state were detected before and after treatment. Results After treatment, FBG was (6.13±1.01) mmol/L , PBG (6.88±2.32) mmol/L and HbA1c was (5.14±1.02) % in the oat group, compared with FBG (7.32±1.31) mmol/L, PBG (9.07±2.11) mmol/L and HbAlc (6.72±1.33) % in the control group. The difference was significant. After treatment, P-INS was (19.01±10.31) mmol/L and TC (4.51±0.71) mmol/L in the oat group, significantly lower than P-INS (23.51±11.83) mmol/L and TC (4.96±0.86) mmol/L in the control group. Before and after treatment, the SAS score difference (19.98±0.79)and SDS score difference (20.17±1.89)in the oat group were more significant than (10.58±0.28) and (9.97±0.64)in the control group. Conclusions Oat can effectively reduce the levels of FBG, PBG, HbA1c, P-INS and TC in patients with type 2 diabetes, and improve the level of mental health of patients with diabetes.
