Abstract:Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) combined with cetirizine hydrochloride in the treatment of chronic urticaria. Methods Sixty-four patients with chronic urticaria were selected and divided into two groups: the treatment group with 32 patients subjected to NB-UVB combined with oral cetirizine hydrochloride and the control group composed of 32 patients administrated with oral cetirizine hydrochloride. The two groups were compared according to the urticaria total severity score (TSS) before and after treatment. All the patients were followed up for 1, 2 and 4 weeks before and after treatment, and the efficacy and side effects were evaluated. Results After treatment, the total scores of symptoms and signs decreased significantly in both groups at 1,2 and 4 weeks (P<0.05).The cure rate in the treatment group was 59.4% and the effective rate was 93.8%, compared to 37.5% and 62.5% in the control group after four weeks of treatment. The difference in the effective rate between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusions NB-UVB in combination with cetirizine hydrochloride is effective for chronic urticaria, with a lower rate of adverse events.
