The spectrum of and risk factors for gastrointestinal diseases of Chinese army during a field training in Central China |

Abstract Objective To investigate the digestive disease spectrum of Chinese army servicemen during a field training in Central China and to analyze related risk factors in order to formulate prevention and treatment strategies. Methods A questionnaire was designed and its quality was evaluated through a pre-survey. Using the stratified cluster random sampling method, one army unit from each of the seven provinces and cities in China was selected.Electronic or paper questionnaire surveys were conducted among these servicemen before the disease spectrum of the digestive system was made available and analyzed. The risk factors were also explored. Results A total of 3055 valid questionnaires were finally collected,which indicated that 896 soldiers presented with symptoms of the digestive system, and that diarrhea was the most common, accounting for 13.7%. 507 soldiers suffered from diseases of the digestive system, including gastritis, enteritis, digestive ulcer and functional bowel disease, accounting for 16.9%, 3.6% and 2.9%, respectively. According to logistic regression analysis, the length of military service(OR:0.59,95%CI:0.51-0.69), status as an officer(OR:1.64,95%CI:1.41-1.91), the field training time(OR:0.90,95%CI:0.84-0.98), pressure of training(OR:1.75,95%CI:1.41-2.17),chilled abdomens(OR:1.32,95%CI:1.10-1.69),and defiled foods(OR:3.25,95%CI:2.52-4.20)were possible risk factors for digestive diseases. Conclusions During a field training, a healthy and regular diet, the thermal outfit, appropriate decompression of negative emotions and proper training time may effectively decrease the risk of digestive diseases and reduce attrition.
