Effect of probiotics on prolonged postoperative ileus after acute abdomen surgery |

Abstract Objective To evaluate the effect of probiotics on delayed prolonged postoperative ileus (PPOI) in acute abdominalgia. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 56 patients who underwent surgery of acute abdominalgia at the Hospital of Jiangxi Armed Police Corps from 2018-01 to 2024-01. They were divided into the probiotics group and the control group, with 28 cases in each group. General information including age, gender, surgical types, surgical methods, operation time and blood loss were collected. Differences in postoperative nutritional status, inflammatory response, intestinal function recovery, and the incidence of PPOI between the 1st and 7th day after surgery were compared. Results Comparing the neutrophil count (NEUT), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), body weight (Wt), albumin (ALB), hemoglobin (Hb), and total lymphocytes(TLC) between the two groups on the 1st day after surgery, the difference was not statistically significant and the data were comparable (P>0.05). Comparing the effects of different intervention methods on the NEUT values, CRP values, and ALB values measured before and after, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The first exhaust time[(46.29±23.06) h vs. (64.29±27.25)h; P<0.05] and hospitalization time [(236.57±97.22) h vs. (314.14±151.59)h;P<0.05] in the probiotics group were shorter than those in the control group, and the incidence of PPOI (10.71% vs. 39.29%;P<0.05) was lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Probiotics after surgery of acute abdominalgia is beneficial to reducing inflammatory response, promoting recovery of intestinal function and decreasing the occurrence of PPOI.
