High-intensity interval training aggravates inflammatory responses in ulcerative colitis of mice

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on clinical symptoms and inflammatory responses in mice with ulcerative colitis (UC).Methods Forty-five male C57BL/6 mice were divided into the rest control (RC), rest model (RM) and exercise model (EM) groups. Mice in the RC group were free to drink distilled water for 7 days after 8 weeks of breeding, while those of RM and EM groups were subjected to modeling after freely drinking dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) solution for 7 days following 8 weeks of breeding or HIIT respectively. The disease activity index (DAI) was recorded daily, colon tissue length was calculated, and histopathological observation was made with HE staining The expressions of such inflammatory factors as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) mRNA were determined.Results Compared with RC group, the colon length was reduced (P<0.05), while DAI, histopathological scores and expressions of inflammatory factors (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) were increased (P<0.05) in RM group. Compared with RM group, colon length decreased (P<0.05), while DAI, histopathological scores and levels of mRNA of IL-1β and TNF-α were further upregulated (P<0.05) in EM group.Conclusion Long-term HIIT can exacerbate clinical symptoms and inflammatory responses in mice with UC, and health effect of HIIT needs to be further confirmed.
